Sunday was “beaning day”, the anniversary of the day that TW took me to Waffle House in Anderson, SC and asked me to “be her girlfriend” – it’s called beaning day because she gave me a gold coffee bean charm.

This year, living in Chicago, it’s pretty much impossible to go to a Waffle House to celebrate. (The nearest Waffle House is in Indiana – which is not too far to drive for a Waffle House except that the little kids were here this weekend and leaving them home alone with TW’s mom, for five hours seemed a little wrong.)

So, I grabbed the Urban Spoon app and went looking for a new to us diner/greasy spoon. I had some ideas about where to go but then I thought… maybe there’s a Huddle House closer than Indiana… Google said there was one in Chicago (Albany Park) so I grabbed the directions… only to find out it isn’t a real Huddle House as in the southern chain. It’s a knock off called The Huddle House Grill.

That’s ok, according the reviews and articles I found… it still seemed Waffle House-like enough to give it a try… so we went.

It’s right across from the Kimball St station. It’s a greasy spoon, for sure. With greasy spoon prices. And greasy spoon decor. And also greasy spoon waitresses.

The food was nothing to write home about (I had biscuits & gravy and hash browns. TW had a greek cheese omelet and hash browns.) We won’t go back unless we just happen to be in that neck of the woods (odds are slim) and in need of a greasy spoon fix.

Still… it was as close to Waffle House as we could come this year, and that made it well worth the visit.
