I remember when we used to see a half dozen Melissa Ferrick shows a year… those were the good ole days. When we were young. Not that I’m complaining or anything. I’ll take what I can get and when I can get a show as fan-fucking-tastic as last night’s show at Evanston Space was… well, that’s enough.
Her opening act, Ria Mae and Margot Durling were talented AND adorable. (Hi Margot! You need a fan page of your own because… duh, you’re awesome. Heh.)
Anne Heaton joining Melissa for a couple of songs was fantastic, too. (That’s one of the good things about living here, I guess. Odds are higher that we’ll get a surprise guest during a show.)
Michelle, TW and I all have slightly different “favorites” (and our “favorites” lists are very very long) and it was pretty cool that she played one song from each of our “favorites” list. That doesn’t always happen, believe it or not.
I got Nebraska.
TW got Anything, Anywhere (with Anne Heaton, which was a treat.)
And Michelle-Belle got Burn this Guitar (which I didn’t record because a very large guy sat down in front of me towards the end of the show and obstructed the camera view. To record, I’d have had to shift way left or way right and then obstruct someone else’s view. Darn it.
We couldn’t have asked for a better show. Really. Melissa played hard. She had fun, so we had fun. She was funny. She looked happy and healthy (except for that shoulder) and I’m looking forward to seeing her back here in the spring. (Unless she books some shows in Florida before that, then we’ll have to pull out the credit cards…)

This blog has been broken since late February. I have no idea why it was broken – it just was. And in the 20 minutes that I had to spend looking at it way back in March, I couldn’t fix it. So… I left it dead and assumed it would be dead until I could spend some quality time with it (or convince someone else to spend some quality time with it.) Yesterday, I took a minute to go into my Bluehost c-panel to update all of my wordpress blogs and I figured what the hell, I’ll see if this one will update so at least I’m keeping up with versions… not only did it update, the blog came back. All by itself.
Yesterday was a great day.
Now I have a lot of catching up to do. We’ve been many places. We’ve eaten a ton of food. We’ve seen a lot of places close because of the crummy economy. I’ll blog it all. Slowly.
It’s time for the DonorsChoose Social Media Challenge. That means it’s time for you to pull out your wallet and donate some dollars to a project that will help students in Chicago public schools.
Click. Donate. It’s super easy and the kids (and their teachers) will thank you – really, you’ll get mail from them. Very nice mail. It will make you smile.
After spending a whole bunch of hours at the Printers Row Lit Fest, we decided we should grab something to eat before heading home. We started out for Chutney Joe’s but it looked empty and maybe like it wasn’t open. I noticed Epic Burger was right next door and since we’d heard a lot about it and hadn’t been, we headed there.
Love the orange decor.
The Epic Burgers with bleu cheese were ok – pretty greasy but ok. If we hadn’t just had fabulous Booby burgers we’d have probably thought they were better than ok. But, there you have it. They just don’t hold a candle to the Big Boob.
The fries on the other hand were excellent. Just how I like them. The right size, the right texture – needed salt but that’s ok, all fries need salt and there were plenty of salt shakers handy to fix that right up.
I should mention the price, it’s a little on the expensive side – more than $20 for just burgers, fries and drinks. That’s too much considering we only paid $25 for all of the stuff we ordered at Booby’s.
Sunday was “beaning day”, the anniversary of the day that TW took me to Waffle House in Anderson, SC and asked me to “be her girlfriend” – it’s called beaning day because she gave me a gold coffee bean charm.
This year, living in Chicago, it’s pretty much impossible to go to a Waffle House to celebrate. (The nearest Waffle House is in Indiana – which is not too far to drive for a Waffle House except that the little kids were here this weekend and leaving them home alone with TW’s mom, for five hours seemed a little wrong.)
So, I grabbed the Urban Spoon app and went looking for a new to us diner/greasy spoon. I had some ideas about where to go but then I thought… maybe there’s a Huddle House closer than Indiana… Google said there was one in Chicago (Albany Park) so I grabbed the directions… only to find out it isn’t a real Huddle House as in the southern chain. It’s a knock off called The Huddle House Grill.
That’s ok, according the reviews and articles I found… it still seemed Waffle House-like enough to give it a try… so we went.
It’s right across from the Kimball St station. It’s a greasy spoon, for sure. With greasy spoon prices. And greasy spoon decor. And also greasy spoon waitresses.
The food was nothing to write home about (I had biscuits & gravy and hash browns. TW had a greek cheese omelet and hash browns.) We won’t go back unless we just happen to be in that neck of the woods (odds are slim) and in need of a greasy spoon fix.
Still… it was as close to Waffle House as we could come this year, and that made it well worth the visit.
